Cellular senescence is not a single uniform state. Different senescence programs can rely on different survival and signaling dependencies, making the search for effective senolytic and senomorphic interventions a challenging biological problem. This PhD project at the Proteomics Center, Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (Vilnius, Lithuania) will investigate these dependencies using controlled cell-based models, molecular perturbation, proteomics and phosphoproteomics. The core of the PhD is experimental cell biology; advanced proteomics will be used as a discovery and mechanistic tool rather than as an end in itself. The broader research environment includes cancer biology, translational research and industry-linked projects. Who we are looking for We welcome applicants with a Master's degree or equivalent background in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, biotechnology, biomedical sciences or a related field. Previous experience specifically in cellular senescence, cancer biology or proteomics is welcome, but not required. More important are: hands-on experimental laboratory experience; experience with mammalian cell culture or related cell-based systems; ability to think experimentally, design appropriate controls and critically interpret results; initiative, willingness to learn and increasing capacity for independent research; good communication skills and a good working command of English. Experience with molecular biology, gene knockout/knockdown or other gene perturbation approaches, microscopy, phenotypic assays, proteomics, phosphoproteomics or quantitative analysis of experimental data is an advantage. We are particularly interested in applicants who want to understand why an experiment worked --- or failed --- rather than simply follow predefined protocols. What we offer a fully funded 4-year PhD position; possibility of additional paid research employment of up to 0.5 FTE alongside the PhD; access to advanced research infrastructure, including Orbitrap Ascend Tribrid mass spectrometry and established proteomics/phosphoproteomics workflows; training across experimental cell biology, molecular biology and advanced proteomics; participation in broader cancer, translational and industry-linked research projects; opportunities for international collaboration and development toward scientific independence. How to apply Please send your application materials to: Dr. Mindaugas Valius Head of the Proteomics Center Vilnius University Life Sciences Center Email: [email protected] Please include: CV; information on your Master's degree and academic background; a brief description of your previous research experience, clearly indicating your own contribution; a short motivation statement; contact details for academic references. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to discuss their previous research and a short experimental problem during an online interview. Initial application deadline: 17 September 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted promptly to allow sufficient time for the formal Vilnius University doctoral application procedure.
